Mazda Reliability
Like many of the top Japanese car manufacturers, Mazda enjoys a well-deserved reputation for market-leading reliability. But our recent reliability survey, which analysed 47,000 warranty policies over a two and half year period, suggests standards may be slipping. We ranked Mazda 19th out of 33 manufacturers with a score of 4.0, not exactly disastrous but considerably lower than you’d expect from a Japanese brand with such a good track record.
This year’s What Car reliability survey was slightly kinder to Mazda, placing it in joint 11th place based on feedback from 18,000 owners. This still represents a slightly under-par performance. But despite evidence that reliability could be better, most Mazda owners seem to be content. According to the Auto Express Driver Power survey, Mazda is the 4th best car manufacturer.

How reliable are Mazda’s top models?
2
Mazda’s stylish 5-door supermini has received plenty of praise for its robust build quality over the years and won the World Car of the Year award when it was released back in 2007. It also fares extremely well in the Reliability Index, ranking 18th out of 250 cars with an impressive score of 20.00, which is considerably better than average. The only note of caution comes from What Car’s reliability survey, which ranked the Mazda 2 19th in a field of 23 small cars.
CX-5
A relatively recent addition to the Mazda stable, the CX-5 large SUV is too new to the market to feature in the Reliability Index but early feedback has been pretty impressive. It finished 8th in the large and luxury SUVs category of What Car’s 2018 reliability survey, ahead of rivals like the Nissan X-Trail and Skoda Kodiaq.
